Richard Curtis
A prolific screenwriter, producer, and director for film and television, Richard Curtis has earned international renown for his award-winning comedic storytelling. His most personal project — eradicating poverty worldwide — is a story still in production.
A New Zealander by birth, Richard Curtis is best known as the Oscar-nominated screenwriter for the popular British romantic comedies Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill, as well as the Mr. Bean television series. His most recently broadcast film, HBO’s Emmy-winning The Girl in the Café, asked hard questions about Third-World debt and poverty in Africa. In addition to co-founding the Make Poverty History campaign and the Live 8 concerts, Curtis founded Comic Relief UK in 1985 to raise money for victims of famine in Ethiopia.

Living for the Greater Good
Screenwriter Richard Curtis has worked with some of the biggest names in show business — Julia Roberts, Hugh Grant, and Emma Thompson. On an ever-increasing basis, though, the “big names” Curtis finds himself working with are ones like Gyamfi and Violet, Pamoja and Rashid. They are the men, women, and children who live in under-resourced parts of places like Africa and India who long for hope amid otherwise hopeless realities. Founder of such efforts as the UK’s annual Red Nose Day and executive producer of “Idol Gives Back,” Curtis is striving to move these names into the limelight and give international fame to the eradication of extreme poverty and treatable diseases as described in his Summit interview, Living for the Greater Good.

Next Steps
Process Question for Teams:
Richard made a bold statement that those who pray at night for people in poverty should get up the next day and actually do something about it. He also claimed that the church’s work to end poverty could be its greatest victory. As a group, talk about the following questions: What is your church or ministry currently doing to tangibly help those in poverty? What is one new thing your church or ministry can do to tangibly help?
Process Question for Individuals:
Bill challenged every Summit participant at the end of this session to get involved in the fight against global poverty and AIDS. As a leader, think about what you do well. Take several moments to reflect or journal about what gifts, talents, or expertise you have that could help in this fight, and think of one way you can get involved using the gifts or talents you’ve identified.
For more processing questions like these, reserve your copy of The Leadership Summit 2007 Team Edition on DVD.

Efrem Smith Responds to Session 8from Ray PelletierEfrem Smith is an anointed leader and preacher. His thoughts and sermons drop like truth bombs. He has a prophet's passion and calling to be about reconciliation between people, between races, and the Church. Because of our friendship and partnership with Efrem, because we have sat under his teaching and have heard his heart, Willow is both one step closer to being the Blessed Community God calls us to be and more aware than ever of how far we have to go

Bill's comments, Brian McLaren's thoughts...not to mention what I feel God is saying to me. There are so many things we can do, so many things our churches can do and/or re-think. And some of that takes time, time to think through your strategy and plan on how to make a true long-term difference. If you are looking for just one step you could take now, then I encourage you, if you are a U.S. citizen, to check out the ONE campaign. It is something each
